Stony Brook Earns First Trip to NCAA Tournament

The Stony Brook men’s basketball team is making its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament with an 80-74 victory this afternoon in the American East Championship over Vermont at Island Federal Credit Union Arena on the Stony Brook campus.

The Seawolves were led by Jameel Warney, a three-time America East Player of the Year, who scored 43 points to carry his school to the Big Dance for the first time ever.

The Catamounts from Vermont looked like they would advance to the NCAAs with a 15-point lead in the second half, but Stony Brook clawed back behind seniors Carson Puriefoy with 23 points and Warney, who scored a career high and tied a conference tournament scoring record.

Stony Brook, located on Long Island, is one of four University Centers in the State University of New York. It became a Division I school in basketball in 1999 and this is the first time they won the American East Conference championship.
