Fate of the Furious Sets Global Record

Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the Fast and Furious series, set a global box office record this weekend with $532.5 million according to research firm comScore.

The film beat out Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 which earned $529 million in its opening weekend.

In the U.S., the movie — starring Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, and Dwayne Johnson — earned $100.2 million over the Easter weekend for first place, followed by Boss Baby with $15.5 million and Beauty and the Beast with $13.6 million.

comScore’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, “Universal’s ‘The Fate of the Furious,’ the eighth film in the popular franchise, revved up and hit the gas with a monumental biggest-ever global opening weekend of $532.5 million, including a massive debut in China, where the film posted the biggest 3-day opening weekend of all-time.”
