The New York Yankees pulled off a stunning comeback Wednesday night, beating Cleveland 5-2 to win the five-game series 3-2. They now advance to the American League Championship Series against Houston starting on Friday.
Last Friday, it looked like the Yankees would make a quick exit in the Divisional Series after losing Game 2, 9-8 in 14 innings, and blowing an 8-3 lead. The Yankees were down 2-0 in the series after falling in Game 1, 4-0.
But the Yankees came back with tremendous pitching to win Games 3 and 4 in Yankee Stadium, then capping off the comeback with a win at the Indians’ Progressive Field. Cleveland finished the regular season, 102-60, winning the Central Division and also setting an American League record in September with a 21-game winning streak.
The Yankees finished the regular season at 91-71, just two games behind the Boston Red Sox. They beat the Minnesota Twins in the wildcard game, 8-4. Houston Astros eliminated the Red Sox in the Divisional Series, 3-1. The Astros were the AL West champion and finished the regular season 101-61.
