Matt Lauer, host of the Today Show on NBC since 1994, has been fired by the network after accusations of sexual harassment.
NBC News President Andrew Lack decided to terminate Lauer after a female employee came forward with a complaint Monday night. Although this was the first accusation of misconduct in Lauer’s career at NBC, Lack said they did not believe this was an isolated incident.
The shocking departure of Lauer, 59, leaves a gaping hole for NBC. Lauer is the long-time host of NBC’s Today, which has been battling ABC’s Good Morning America as the top-rated morning news program. Lauer was also host of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with co-host Savannah Guthrie and was also a host for NBC’s coverage of the Olympic Games.
Guthrie made the announcement of Lauer’s firing this morning on the Today Show accompanies by Hoda Kotb. She said she is “heartbroken” over Lauer’s firing and just heard the news this morning. She also commended the bravery of the woman who made the complaint against Lauer and promised NBC will provide more coverage of his firing when facts arise.
