NY Times to Offer Free Access to Title I Schools

The New York Times Company is partnering with Verizon to provide free access to the NYTimes.com website to over seven million students and teachers. The offer is only for Title I high schools across the nation and middle schools within the Verizon Innovative Learning program. Title I schools receive federal funding for low-income students.

The access will also include curated educational content from The Times’s Learning Network, an educational resource that includes articles, photos, videos, illustrations, graphs and podcasts from The Times.

Through this partnership, Verizon and The New York Times Company will reach Title I schools – of which at least 40 percent of the student population belong to low-income households – to bring education resources and news.

The Times Company and Verizon believe that it is critical to ensure that all students, regardless of their family’s economic situation, have access to quality independent journalism and the technological skills needed for critical thinking, civil dialogue and active citizenship. Both companies believe that this partnership has the potential to change education for millions of students and teachers across the nation.

High school faculty and students will receive full digital access to The Times when connected to their school’s network, and middle school teachers will be able to access Learning Network content through the Verizon Innovative Learning Connections portal. The Verizon Innovative Learning program works to empower under-resourced Title 1 middle schools with free technology, internet access, and a STEM-infused curriculum to help inspire the next generation of technologists, entrepreneurs, innovators and more.
