Supermarkets Cutting Hours to Stock Shelves

Supermarkets in New York and around the country are reducing hours to stock shelves and clean and sanitize due to the coronavirus. Stores have been experiencing a run on essential items for fear of quarantine and many chains are restricting sales of sanitizer, toilet paper and medicines.

Wegman’s — a chain based in Rochester and usually open 24 hours a day — announced the following temporary store hours:

  • All New York State stores (excluding Brooklyn) and Erie, Pennsylvania: 6 am – 12 am
  • New England, New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania (Excluding Erie), North Carolina stores: 6 am – 11 pm
  • Maryland stores: 6 am – 10 pm
  • Brooklyn: 7 am – 11 pm

Price Chopper — a chain based in Schenectady with locations in upstate NY, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont — is reducing opening times from 24 hours to 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. until further notice.

Walmart, the nation’s largest discount chain, said it will reduce hours at some locations open 24 hours to restock and clean stores. It did not provide a list of which stores will close early.

Publix, a southeast supermarket chain, is closing all stores early at 8 p.m. every night until further notice.

Shop-Rite, a chain based in New Jersey, has not announced reduction of hours but says requests for delivery are high and warning of longer delivery times.
