Macy’s, Nordstrom to Close Stores

Two of the nation’s largest department store chains are closing their stores for two weeks to prevent spread of coronavirus.

Macy’s will temporarily close all stores by end of business Tuesday through March 31, 2020. This includes all Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bluemercury, Macy’s Backstage, Bloomingdales the Outlet and Market by Macy’s stores. Macy’s, Inc. will provide benefits and compensation to its impacted workforce.

“The health and safety of our customers, colleagues and communities is our utmost priority. As a result of the recent COVID-19 developments, we have decided to temporarily close our stores. We will work with government and health officials to assess when we will reopen our stores and safely bring our colleagues back to work,” said Jeff Gennette, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. “During this closure, we will continue to serve our customers through our e-commerce sites.”

Nordstrom announced it will close all of its stores for two weeks beginning Tuesday. This decision includes all U.S. and Canada stores including Nordstrom department stores, Nordstrom Rack, Trunk Club clubhouses and Jeffrey.

We’re taking decisive actions across the business to help protect employees, customers and others in the communities we serve,” said Erik Nordstrom, chief executive officer, Nordstrom, Inc.

The company said it will provide pay and benefits for its store employees during this two-week closure.

The company remains open and ready to serve customers through its apps and online at Nordstrom.comNordstromrack.comHauteLook.com and TrunkClub.com—including digital styling, online order pickup and curbside services at our full-line stores, as allowed by local regulations.

“During this unprecedented period of uncertainty, we have in place the appropriate business continuity plans, operational framework and team,” said Erik Nordstrom. “This, in concert with ending 2019 with a solid financial position and healthy balance sheet, gives us the ability to weather this challenging moment in time.”

Nordstrom is based in Seattle and operates 380 stores in 40 states, including 116 full-line stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico; 248 Nordstrom Rack stores; three Jeffrey boutiques; two clearance stores; six Trunk Club clubhouses; and five Nordstrom Local service hubs.
