NY Times Hires New Dealbook Reporter

The NY Times says it has hired CNBC reporter Lauren Hirsch (photo above) to write for the DealBook e-mail newsletter in New York. She will report on business, policy and mergers and acquisitions. She will also contribute to the Business section of The NY Times.

Hirsch was previously with CNBC, where she was a reporter covering a wide range of business beats. Previously, she was a mergers and acquisitions team leader at Reuters, focusing on consumer and retail deals.

At CNBC, Lauren broke news on some of the biggest retail bankruptcies in the past few years, including J. Crew, J.C. Penney and Sears. Her scoop that Toys R Us was preparing for bankruptcy was memorialized in court when the company’s advisers blamed the story for blowing their cover. She also reported on Campbell Soup’s proxy battle and Kraft Heinz’s fall from its perch as a Wall Street darling.

Last year, she broadened her beat to include business and politics. She has covered the shift to stakeholder capitalismantitrust investigations into Google and the debate over corporate bailouts.

“We’ve been fans of Lauren’s work for some time, and it’s clear that she will make DealBook even more essential with her extensive sourcing, scoops and smart analysis,” Jason Karaian, DealBook’s editor, said. “Lauren will play a crucial role on a growing team of reporters and editors, and we can’t wait for readers to see the next chapter of our plans.”

Hirsch studied comparative literature at Cornell University and has an M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Before the pandemic, she could be found every weekend at a fitness class or at the theater. Now, she’s enjoying streaming classes and spending time with her family.
