Northwell Hires New Director of Inflammatory Bowel Center

Northwell Health announced the appointment of renowned colorectal surgeon Feza Remzi, MD, as vice president of its Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. About 3.1 million Americans suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a condition associated with chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.

Dr. Remzi, who will have an office in New Hyde Park and perform surgeries at hospitals across Long Island, NYC and Westchester, specializes in the treatment of patients with IBD and other complex colorectal conditions, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, pelvic pouch procedures, sphincter-saving operations of the rectum and re-operative abdominopelvic surgeries.

“Feza Remzi is an acknowledged surgical leader in the colorectal world who brings his innovative approach to Northwell’s Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease,” said Jill Kalman, MD, executive vice president, chief medical officer and deputy physician-in-chief at Northwell. “With the growing complexity of those with IBD, Northwell is committed to creating a comprehensive center to address these needs and Dr. Remzi will lead this effort.”

Dr. Remzi comes from NYU Langone Health, where he spent the last eight years as director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center. Prior to that, he was chair of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

His knowledge and skill will complement Northwell’s established colorectal surgery program. His practice serves patients who require reoperative complex pouch procedures and other colorectal conditions to avoid permanent stoma. In addition, Dr. Remzi’s practice will also treat pediatric patients with IBD in collaboration with the team at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

“The wealth of experience and innovative vision Feza Remzi brings to Northwell’s IBD program further advances our ability to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care to individuals suffering from complex colorectal conditions,” said Gene Coppa, MD, senior vice president and executive director of Surgical Services at Northwell. “Dr. Remzi’s contributions to the field have not only earned him tremendous respect among his peers but have also significantly improved the quality of life for countless patients nationally and internationally.”

A native of Turkey, Dr. Remzi earned his medical degree from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey. He completed his general surgery residency and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Remzi has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on the surgical management of IBD and ileal J-pouch.

“Inflammatory bowel disease not only impacts the patient but the entire family, so our team is committed to being available, affable, able and accountable to them,” said Dr. Remzi. “This is a personal mission to not only relieve chronic suffering, but to treat every patient like family.”
