Amazon to Create 2,000 Jobs in NYC

Amazon, one of the world’s top Internet companies, announced plans to create 2,000 jobs at the Lord & Taylor building on Fifth Avenue. Amazon acquired the building this year from WeWork, which was the former flagship store of the Lord & Taylor department store chain.

The company plans to open a new 630,000 square foot office at the 111-story building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan between West 38th and West 39th Streets.

In February 2019, Amazon pulled out of plans to build another headquarters building in Long Island City due to community opposition. The Seattle-based company instead chose to build a second headquarters in Northern Virginia only.

Amazon said it has invested more than $7 billion in the state of New York since 2010 and currently employs 24,000 workers across the state.

The new  jobs in New York City are part of 3,500 new tech and corporate jobs Amazon is creating across six cities in the United States. The company will also expand its Tech Hubs in Dallas, Detroit, Denver, Phoenix, and San Diego. Amazon will invest a total of more than $1.4 billion in these new offices, which will host teams supporting businesses across the company.

“People from all walks of life come to Amazon to develop their career – from recent graduates looking for a place to turn their ideas into high-impact products, to veterans accessing new jobs in cloud computing thanks to our upskilling programs,” said Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Amazon. “These 3,500 new jobs will be in cities across the country with strong and diverse talent pools. We look forward to helping these communities grow their emerging tech workforce.”
