Google, which operates the world’s leading search engine, has laid off 887 workers in New York City according to a filing with the NY State Labor Department.
The cutbacks were made by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, as part of 12,000 jobs eliminated worldwide.
NYC is home to the second largest location for Google employees with over 12,000 workers.
The layoffs are the first for Google, which has grown employment steadily until last year, as tech stocks plummeted and interest rates increased.
The move is likely a shock for employees since Google has been seen as one of the best and most prestigious companies to work for since it was founded.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said U.S. employees will receive the following:
- Full pay for employees during the notification period (minimum 60 days).
- Severance package starting at 16 weeks salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google, and accelerate at least 16 weeks of Google Stock Unit vesting.
- Will pay 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation time.
- Will offer 6 months of healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support for those affected.
