The New York State Thruway Authority announced the reopening of the newly renovated Malden Service Area located on I-87 northbound between exit 20 (Saugerties – Woodstock – NY Route 32) and exit 21 (Catskill – Cairo – NY Route 23) in Ulster County. The location is the 23rd new service area to open and the fourth location to undergo extensive renovations as part of the $450 million private investment to redevelop and modernize all 27 Thruway service areas.
With the opening of the Malden Service Area, all service areas located on I-87 northbound are now open to the public.
As part of the project, all of the components inside the restaurant building were removed including the restaurants, restrooms and interior seating. The renovation includes a new floor plan, new restaurants, new restrooms, the addition of two new family assist restrooms, private nursing area, additional seating as well as customer access to electrical outlets and phone/laptop charging stations. The service area is one of just four that were remodeled instead of being torn down and rebuilt. The Malden rest area is 18,220 square feet in size.
“The opening of the Malden Service Area marks another milestone in the service area redevelopment project along the I-87 corridor,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank Hoare, Esq. said. “Motorists traveling on I-87 northbound for the Autumn tourism season and upcoming holidays can now enjoy new amenities and restaurant options at all the reopened locations. The Thruway Authority is committed to maintaining a safe and reliable roadway offering motorists a modernized transportation system and infrastructure investments to serve customers for decades to come.”
