LI Jewish Medical Center Opens $6.1 Million Operating Room

Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center has begun performing advanced vascular surgical procedures inside its $6.1 million, state-of-the-art hybrid operating room (OR).

The newly renovated 956-square-foot space took nearly six months to complete and features an advanced suite of software and equipment, such as Brainlab’s digital integration system, Siemens imaging platforms and Skytron’s advanced lighting system. The hybrid OR is one of 28 ORs at LIJ that handle the most complex cases in Nassau and Queens counties.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center is a 583-bed, tertiary care teaching hospital that treats more than 80,000 patients each year. Home to the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital and the Katz Women’s Hospital, LIJ has nine clinical specialties ranked in the top 50 nationally by US News & World Report.

“We are very excited that our new state-of-the-art hybrid operating room has opened,” said Mathew Foley, MD, medical director, LIJ. “This operating room allows us to expand our vascular surgery capabilities and has improved our vascular imaging technology in the OR. We are proud to offer these high-quality services and technologies to our community.”

Advanced X-ray technology inside the hybrid OR will allow LIJ vascular surgeons to better target complex aortic aneurysm repairs, carotid stenting of dangerous stroke-causing blockages and limb-threatening peripheral artery disease.

Northwell, New York State’s largest health system, has made significant investments in vascular surgery throughout the New York Metro market. The new space joins North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, which opened three hybrid ORs as part of the 288,000-square-foot Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion to redefine specialty surgery in the region when it debuted in 2024.

“This investment translates into less radiation exposure, contrast and time in the OR for the overall benefit of the patient,” said Gregg Landis, MD, system chief of vascular surgery at Northwell. “This hybrid OR symbolizes Northwell’s significant commitment to improve vascular health. You don’t need to leave the region to get world-class vascular care.”
